It is easy to become complacent when you have been doing the same job for years but the railway remains a dangerous industry.
For that reason, we always kick off the year with an event for all our staff where we featured a host of speakers on the topic of safety.
Chief Civil Engineer of Iarnród Éireann - Irish Rail (IÉ), Cathal Mangan, spoke about how he does not differentiate between Irish Rail staff and contractors when it comes to safety. Everyone is equally important, and everyone is expected to follow the rules and processes. This year Irish Rail is focusing on highlighting the fact that everyone is a Safety Leader and it is incumbent on everyone to speak up if they see something that is not right.
Safety also starts at home which is why we focused on driving and sleep, something which is also linked to our January safety topic of General Health.
Donnchadh Cody shared his personal experience of being involved in a serious road traffic accident and Eimear Crowley focused on sleep.
We also presented Safety Awards to our colleagues Willie Spollen, Marc Gorman and Paul Church for their outstanding contributions to our safety record in 2025.
Thanks to all our staff who attended and who actively participated on the day.
